Multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains of both Acinetobacter baumannii (AB) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) as causative ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) pathogens are becoming increasingly common. Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a complication with high morbidity and mortality, especially if multiresistant (MR) microorganisms (MO) like Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pae), Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kpn) and Acinetobacter spp (Ac) are involved. Therefore, it is of interest to highlight the prevalence and resistance of MO found in tracheal aspirates (TA) of intensive care (IC) patients, in order to establish appropriate empirical therapy (ET).
Background: Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic nosocomial pathogen responsible for 2 –10% of all gram-negative nosocomial infections and is classified in the six most important multidrug-resistant microorganisms in hospitals worldwide. Most frequent and lethal (35-52%) infections include ventilator associated pneumonia and bacteremia. Outbreaks of resistant strains are increasingl y reported worldwide, being sustained by similar clusters that successfully spread due to acquisition of antimicrobial resistance genes.
In conclusion, aging increased susceptibility to A. baumannii infection and impaired efficacies of antibiotics and vaccine. The aged mice model of A. baumannii pneumonia is a suitable model to study the effects of aging on A. baumannii infection and assess the efficacies of antibiotics and vaccines against A. baumannii for the elderly.

Conclusion: This study reveals that the prevalence of MDR Gram-negative pathogens is perceived to be on the rise. Prescription patterns indicate high levels of variability. Hence, antibiotic stewardship is essential to standardize antibiotic prescriptions not only for efficacy but also to reduce the burden of multiple drug resistance.
