Charles LeRoy Murray is a retired medical oncologist and professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine.

A retired medical oncologist and professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, Dr. Murray has devoted more than 45 years to his profession. Teaching on campus as a clinical professor of medicine for 30 years, he has also served as a senior advisor for the Cancer Research Institute for several years. Additionally, he was a consultant for both Park-Nicollet Clinic/Health Systems in Minneapolis and Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. Furthermore, Dr. Murray was the medical director for the Upper Midwest Oncology Registry System in Minneapolis from 1974 to 2003 and the director of oncology at the Methodist Hospital in Minneapolis from 1980 to 1992.
Instrumental in developing a computerized cancer registry, Dr. Murray first earned a Bachelor of Science in quantitative biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1957. In 1961, he obtained a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota. He was elected to membership in Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. A diplomate in internal medicine and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, he completed both his residency work and fellowship at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. from 1962 to 1965. Dr. Murray then served as the captain in the U.S. Force from 1965 to 1967.
During his career, Dr. Murray spent several years as a co-principal investigator for the Minnesota Metro Clinical Oncology Program in Minneapolis, was a trustee for the Park Nicollet Clinic for a total of 14 years and was the president of the Minnesota division of the American Cancer Society, Inc. He is a longstanding member of the American Medical Association’s technical assessment committee, the American Society for Clinical Oncology, the American Medical Informatics Association, among several other professional societies. Notably, he has contributed more than 50 articles to various medical journals in his field of expertise. Furthermore, Dr. Murray is an elected fellow of the American College of Physicians.
In 2018, Dr. Murray has been newly appointed to serve as the vice president of his local Kiwanis Club. He is also the commodore of the Santa Cruz Yacht Club, where he formerly served as director of the club’s youth program. Moreover, Dr. Murray enjoys participating in sailboat racing, church activities, and spending quality time with his grandchildren.
Married to his wife, Hilda Costa, since 1957, he support allowed all this. Dr. Murray is the proud father of three children. In light of his achievements within his industry, he was the recipient of a St. George Medal from the Minnesota Division of the American Cancer Society in 1990. Dr. Murray has been selected for inclusion in the 25th and 26th editions of Who’s Who in the Midwest.
