Klinefelter syndrome is the most common chromosomal disorder associated with male hypogonadism and infertility. This condition is caused by the presence of an additional X chromosome in the affected male. Common symptoms include small testes, low sperm count, breast enlargement in late puberty, learning disabilities, psychosocial problems, infertility, dental problems, mitral valve prolapse and venous ulcers.
The Ayurvedic treatment of Klinefelter syndrome is aimed at treating the symptoms including infertility and psychosocial problems. Medicines like Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta), Samudrashosh (Argyreia speciosa), Kuchla (Strychnos nuxvomica), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Abhrak-Bhasma, Trivang-Bhasma and Makar-Dhwaj are used to treat the symptoms of hypogonadism. Learning disabilities and psychosocial problems can be treated using medicines like Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi), Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis), Mandukparni (Centella asiatica), Vacha (Acorus calamus), Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina), Khurasani ova (Hyoscyamus niger) and Jaiphal (Myristica fragrans).
Dental problems can be treated using medicines like Bakul (Aconitum ferox), Kattha (Acacia catechu), Maiphal (Quercus infectoria), Lavang (Caryophyllus aromaticus) and Elaichi (Elettaria cardamomum). Venous ulcers can be treated using medicines like Gandhak-Rasayan, Sukshma-Triphala, Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha and Saarivadi-Churna. Cardiac problems can be treated using medicines like Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Shrung-Bhasma, Arjunarishta, Dashmoolarishta, Drakshasav, Laxadi-Guggulu and Punarnavadi-Qadha. Skeletal problems can be treated using medicines like Yograj-Guggulu, Kaishor-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Asthishrunkhala (Cissus quadrangularis), Shankh-Bhasma and Praval-Panchamrut-Bhasma. Infertility can be treated using medicines like Ashwagandha, Kapikacchu, Samudrashosh, Gokshuradi-Guggulu, Chandraprabha-Vati, Shilajit (Purified bitumen), Ras-Sindur, Maha-Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Trivang-Bhasma and Suvarna-Bhasma.
Most people affected with Klinefelter syndrome have a normal life span. An early diagnosis can lead to an early initiation of therapy and better long term therapeutic results. It is advisable to have a multi disciplinary team approach in the management of this condition.
